Heat Pumps: The Sustainable Heating Solution

Forest Group specialises in air source heat pump solutions, the eco-friendly and energy-efficient heating solution for your home or business. At Forest Group, we’re committed to promoting sustainable living, and heat pumps are a key part of that mission.

Understanding Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are an innovative and eco-friendly way to heat your home and water. They work by drawing heat from the outside air—even on cold days—and converting it into warmth for your home’s heating system. Think of them like a fridge, but in reverse.  Instead of removing heat to make things cold, they capture heat to keep your home or water warm.

Why Choose an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • Efficient Heating: Extracts heat from the outdoor air, even in freezing temperatures.
  • Hot Water On-Demand: Provides reliable hot water for showers, baths, and daily use.
  • Low-Carbon Alternative: Reduces your reliance on traditional gas or oil boilers, cutting emissions and lowering your carbon footprint.

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

The process is simple yet effective:

  1. Heat Extraction: The outdoor refrigeration unit absorbs heat from the outside air.
  2. Heat Boost: Using electricity, it then compresses the extracted heat to a higher temperature.
  3. Heat Transfer: The generated warmth is distributed to your home’s heating system, including radiators, underfloor heating, or a hot water cylinder.

Common Questions About Air Source Heat Pumps

Yes, they’re designed to function even in sub-zero temperatures. Modern systems can operate effectively in temperatures as low as -25°C, making them suitable for the UK’s climate. During installation, a technical survey ensures your pump and heating system are optimised for your property, so your home stays warm no matter the weather.

Air source heat pumps don’t just heat your home—they also provide hot water. They work with a storage cylinder to keep water heated and ready for use.

Installing a heat pump solution in a new build, or in an existing house where pipe routes will be accessible, for example as part of a significant refurbishment project can be very easy and there are many options available.

Where you have an existing, traditional gas boiler system, this can be more of a challenge.  The water from a heat pump system usually produces lower temperature water than a gas boiler, so the surface area needed to circulate that heat needs to be bigger. Options include larger radiators and underfloor heating.

Grant funding is often available to assist with installation costs associated with an upgrade to heat pump, but there are strict terms which must be adhered to.  If cost is a less important factor in your decision making, there are ways to install a hybrid system where a heat pump would do most of the work, and an existing gas boiler would do the remainder of the work when required to achieve the higher temperature needed to work with existing radiator systems.

Heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures compared to traditional boilers, which means larger radiators or underfloor heating may be required for maximum efficiency. Our experts will evaluate your property during a survey and include any necessary upgrades, like new piping or radiators, in your quote.
